Washington Artillery 5th Co. "Slocomb's Battery"

Army Of Tennessee

5th Indiana 2nd Detachment

5th Indiana Independent. Light Artillery Battery,

2nd Detachment, 4th Corps.

Capt. Peter Simonson

ca. 1860

     Grant       4th Corps Badge     Sherman

We are First and foremost Washington Artillery 5th Co. "Slocomb's Battery", but we also reenact as: The 5th Indiana/2nd Detachment. The main reason for this is if we didn't Galvanize or change sides at times there wouldn't be a reenactment at all. Our unit and others like us portray both side, when there is not enough Federal troops to have a reenactment, and in order honor the soldiers, and the conflict in which they were engaged in. The word Galvanize was coined during The War Between the States to describe a soldier that had changed sides for one reason or an other.

We choose the 5th Indiana/2nd Detachment for their heroism and bravery during the battles in which they were engaged in. As well we work with the StonesRiver National Battle Field in Murfreesboro, Tn., and the 5th Indiana/1st detachment. We fall in under the 5th Indiana/1st detachment as our parent unit when we go federal. Their officers and command become ours at that time, the rules and regulations of the 5th Indiana/1st detachment apply to our unit and all that are attached to our unit, as well as our own rules and regulations still apply. Our Federal uniforms ( 2nd det.) consist of a Federal sack coat with the 4th Corps badge on it, sky blue trousers, a Federal blue kepi with cross cannon and the number 5 on it, artillerymen's boots, and black belt with U.S. oval belt plate.
